The Mississippi Conference of Young People in Alcoholics Anonymous (MSCYPAA) is an organization of young (or young-at-heart) people who give back to the community which has given us so much by organizing events and aconference every year. MSCYPAA is not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous, nor with any other organization, but we do try to live by the principles of AA. Our members are all members of Alcoholics Anonymous and practice the twelve steps, and as an organization, we attempt to adhere to the Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics anonymous.
Young people's conventions have been around for a while, and MSCYPAA is amongst the youngest in the country. There was some activity in the 80's, but MSCYPAA had been largely abandoned until 2003 when several members in the Jackson area started it up again. The first recent MSCYPAA conference was in 2004 at Roosevelt state park and had an attendance of around 40. The next several conferences jumped around Jackson from the Cabot Lodge to the Eagle Ridge Convention Center. Last year (2007), our conference at the Millsaps Cabot Lodge in Jackson, MS had a registration of around 300. In just a few years through the tireless efforts of many volunteers, MSCYPAA has gone from non-existence to a financially viable, well-attended conference that many look forward to every year.
The MSCYPAA conference is on memorial day weekend every year, and for the first time in recent memory, MSCYPAA will be a traveling convention. We have had interest from Hattiesburg and Southhaven to bid on the convention for next year. If you live in either of those areas, or in any other area in Mississippi, we encourage you to get involved in bidding and getting those around you to get excited about YPAA's.
